The Bible Society
The Bible Society’s aim is to end ‘Bible poverty’. It works for the day when the Bible’s God-given revelation, inspiration and wisdom shape lives and communities everywhere. Its task is huge because the Bible awaits translation into more than 4,500 languages, only 3% of languages have the Bible in audio form and the Bible in Braille exists in only 30 languages. The joy with which people read or hear about God’s love for them for the first time is very special. At least a billion people live in such poverty that they cannot afford to buy a Bible.
Recently the Bible Society supported a very special occasion in Nepal by sending a great many Scriptures to the country where for the first time Christians, on Christmas Day 2008, were allowed to worship freely and celebrate the birth of Jesus.
St Peter’s donates 20% of its mission giving (£1400 in 2008) to the Bible Society. Several members belong to the Bible a Month Club. In return for a minimum monthly contribution (currently £4 per month) – the average cost of producing a Bible – they receive a bi-monthly update on the Bible Society’s worldwide work.
In addition, St Peter’s is a member church of the Banstead Action Group, consisting of several local churches, which organises concerts, sponsored walks and many other fundraising events to support the Bible Society. The most recent of these was a strawberry tea in the orchard of All Saints, Banstead, on a beautiful sunny afternoon in July. On Saturday 6th March 2010 St Giles Brass Ensemble (some of whose members play at the annual Chelsea Flower Show) makes an eagerly awaited return to St Peter’s.
