Come and see (John 1.46)

Churchyard

St Peter's has a large, open churchyard.  It has been used for hundreds of years as a place of burial and still today people who have a connection to the parish choose to be buried here or to have their ashes interred in anexisting grave or the area around the cremation cross.  The churchyard is a quiet place and so people are welcome to visit and discover something of the quietness for themselves.  In addition our churchyard is a place for wildlife,  we want to encourage and develop this green space for both people and wildlife.  For this reason we have a set of rules which must be adherred to by all who come into this space;  these cover such areas as who is entitled to be buried or have their ashes interred,  the type and size of memorials that are allowed and how we can all ensure mainteance for wildlife.  Please see the attached the document which sets all this out.

It is the responsibility of the PCC of St Peter's to maintain the churchyard. We aim to cut the majority of the grass twice a year, once towards the end of April and then again in September,  the grass in the area of the cremation cross is cut on a much more regular basis.  By managing the grass in this way it will enable the wild flowers to grow, set seed and flourish. We hold a monthly churchyard working party where we carry out various mainteance jobs for example;  clearng leaves from the gutters,  removing dead flowers,  cutting back and weeding of paths.  Generally these work parties take place on the last Wednesday of the month 10:00-12:00,  all are welcome to join and help out.
